GPSlife GmbH is an education and consultancy firm founded in 2024 and based in Chemnitz, which grew out of a research project at Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz). The company’s primary aim is to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in managing and integrating the highly complex ISO-GPS system. Its core promise to the market is to reduce ambiguities in product specifications through structured, maturity-level-based support – ranging from specialist-group-oriented training to error-free, company-wide practical implementation.

How is the company funded? How much does it cost customers?

The costs depend on the course content and the number of licences required (= participating staff members). Specific course offerings can be found on the page https://gpslife.de/akademie/ may be requested.

Since 1996, the system has grown from fewer than 40 to just under 150 valid individual standards and is subject to a process of continuous revision (e.g. ISO 1101). This complexity is difficult to manage without a structured approach.

There is no law mandating the use of ISO GPS. However, in disputes concerning (product) liability, the analysis is also based on the current state of the art, as defined by international standards. Furthermore, if even a single – and often very well-established – symbol from the ISO GPS system is used in a drawing, the entire system, together with its rules and principles, applies.

GPSlife GmbH supports partner companies with systematic training in the ISO-GPS system and actively assists them in implementing it into their business practices through a maturity-level-based roadmap.

The ISO-GPS system includes, amongst others, the standards ISO 8015, ISO 14405, ISO 2768, ISO 22081 and ISO 1101.

MBD stands for Model-Based Definition.

In model-based definition, a 3D CAD model serves as the single source of truth for all manufacturing and product information (PMI), thereby replacing traditional 2D drawings.

The unambiguous geometric specifications set out by ISO GPS are the technical prerequisite for implementing MBD accurately in 3D models. GPSlife supports company staff in understanding and applying these standards correctly.
